Power of Attorney & Living Will in Switzerland – Caveo 3.0

Why power of attorney and living wills matter – and how Caveo 3.0 helps combine legal, medical, and financial wellbeing in one digital platform.

ower of Attorney & Living Will: Who Decides When You Can’t?

Most people plan their finances – but not their decisions.
A sudden illness, an accident, or a diagnosis can change everything overnight.
And then comes the question no one wants to ask:
Who makes the decisions if you can’t?

That’s the topic of the latest episode of derfinanzplaner, hosted by Philippe Muntwyler, Co-Founder of Caveo.
In conversation with René Bätschmann, Founder of vobox.ch, they explore how power of attorney and living wills can protect not just your finances – but your family, your wishes, and your peace of mind.

Why a Power of Attorney Matters in Switzerland

A power of attorney (Vorsorgeauftrag) defines who can legally represent you if you lose decision-making capacity – for example, after an accident or due to illness.
It determines who pays bills, manages accounts, or handles contracts on your behalf.

Without a valid power of attorney, the Swiss Child and Adult Protection Authority (KESB) steps in – not necessarily the person you would have chosen.
Having one in place ensures autonomy, even when you’re no longer able to act yourself.

A Living Will: Decisions Before It’s Too Late

A living will (Patientenverfügung) outlines your medical preferences – which treatments you wish to receive or refuse in a critical health situation.
It relieves your loved ones from making impossible decisions under emotional stress.

However, many living wills in Switzerland are outdated or incomplete.
Even small formal errors or missing updates can make them invalid.
As René Bätschmann explains in the podcast, a living will should be reviewed regularly and updated after major life changes.
